Incidental finding of pure squamous cell carcinoma of the gallbladder – a case report

Background: Carcinomas arising from the gallbladder are highly aggressive tumours with limited treatment options available beyond surgical resection. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), including adenosquamous carcinoma, makes up 1–4% of carcinomas which often present at an advanced stage worse prognosis than conventional adenocarcinoma. A pure SCC is even rarer, reported incidence 1% all carcinomas.1,2 Case review: An 80-year old female presented to emergency department acute onset epigastric pain and vomiting. Her CT scan showed cholelithiasis thickening wall features suggestive adenomyomatosis. The findings cholecystitis empyema. During macroscopic dissection, there was unexpected finding a yellow, firm nodule measuring 22 mm infiltrating mid-portion wall. histology poorly differentiated squamous no glandular component identified. Conclusion: Gallbladder SCCs uncommon data in literature. Ongoing report review these cases may assist providing further insight their pathogenesis optimal management. References 1.
